CANTxT Cell Phone Service Now In Effect
February 9, 2012

The Plympton & Gilbert's Cove Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce that we have signed up to the CANTxT service. Firefighters will now received a text message on their cell phones shortly after we are paged to respond to an emergency call. This will help in firefighter response because firefighters anywhere will be able to see when we are paged to an emergency even if they cannot hear their pager or the reception is bad due to their location.

Firefighters with cell phones who have signed up for the CANTxT service are advised that the service came into effect on February 9, 2012.

All firefighters who signed up for the service should have received the initial message and a weekly test message last night.

Effective immediately, all firefighters who are signed up for the service should receive text messages on their cell phone in the event of an emergency call. You should receive the basic information such as type of emergency, civic address, community and time of page out.

End of CANTxT Message

Plympton & Gilbert's Cove Fire Department- Station & Apparatus

The Plympton & Gilbert's Cove Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1963. It all started when a number of the area's residents felt that fire trucks and firefighters from neighbouring communities were too far away for an efficient response for the safety of their community.

Our first Chief Mr. Gus Melanson and his wife Rosalie often took from their own pocket, along with many other members from the community to purchase equipment and vehicles so that we could answer our own fire and emergency calls.

Today you can still count on the volunteer firefighters of the Plympton & Gilbert's Cove Volunteer Fire Department to answer the call when help is needed.

Although we are primarily a "fire department" we offer other services to our community such as flooded basement pumping (in emergency situations only, not a regular service), medical first response, and various community and public service activities such as fire prevention, fire station and apparatus tours, assisting numerous community organizations with their events such as traffic control, parking assistance, parades and other social events. Some of our firefighters are also members of the Digby Ground Search & Rescue team, and respond to search and rescue calls when needed.

Plympton & Gilbert's Cove Fire Department Shoulder Patch

The membership of the department decided that a few years ago that it was time for a change from the standard CAFC shoulder patch. A few different designs and color schemes were submitted and this is the design that was adopted. We wanted something that would represent both the communities of Plympton and Gilbert's Cove.

The crest is shaped in the shape of the standard fire maltese cross. The name on the inner gold circle in bold type. The lighthouse shown on the left hand of the picture is the Gilbert's Cove Lighthouse. Now a local and popular summer tourist attraction it is also a great place to take a walk on the beach or get a great view of the beautiful St. Mary's Bay.

The body of water in the center of the picture is the beautiful St. Mary's Bay. Another tourist attraction and wonderful view.

The park with the embankment leading down to the water on the right is known as Savary Park, and is one of Nova Scotia's provincial parks. Savary Park is also another tourist attraction, and has a popular road that surrounds it. Many locals and tourists walk the road, take a leisurely drive through the park and some stop in for a few hours for a picnic or just to get another breath-taking view of St. Mary's Bay.

The figures under the word "VOLUNTEER" are all of the families and people in all of our coverage area that we protect, and rely on when we need help. Without community support we wouldn't have a great fire department.

All of which combined make our crest unique and specific to our area

PGCFD Shoulder Patches (Past & Present)

pgcfd_shoulder_crest_1st.jpg

This was the first uniform shoulder patch worn on a PGCFD uniform. Basic embroidery design with the firefighter "scramble" in  the center. Worn on the uniform shirt.

pgcfd_shoulder_crest_overcoat.jpg

This crest was used in conjunction with the red and white crest above. This crest was only for the overcoat worn with the uniform. Rank was indicated in the center of the patch. This crest belonged to the Chief, all other non-ranking firefighters just had the "PG&C" across the top and "FIRE DEPT." below.

pgcfd_shoulder_crest_old.jpg

This crest was our most recently retired one. It was in service with the PGCFD for many years. This crest is universal because many other departments still use this design with the Canadian Maltese Cross in the center with their department name on the over head banner.

This crest is today's standard used by all firefighters and officers in the PGCFD. Explanation of design above.
